František HALAS:
Dětem – Un poète parle
aux enfants
.
[A Poet speaks to Children].
1998

František Halas, a Czech poet and Suzanne Renaud and Bohuslav Reynek’s contemporary, wrote this verse for his two little boys, Jan and František. Unpublished in French until now, Renaud translated them for her nieces, Suzanne and Magali, often with a certain amount of freedom in order to preserve their musicality. They appear opposite the original text in a typographical composition that establishes a lively correspondence between the two languages, Czech and French. The illustrations were chosen from among the works of Czech artist Josef Čapek, a friend of Renaud and Reynek’s. At the end of the book, another poem by Halas, Staré ženy [Old Women], adapted by Renaud, tells the grandchildren of their grandmother’s presence in the evening at bedtime.
