Out of print

Had na sněhu [The Snake on the Snow] is the first French translation of poems by Czech poet and graphic artist Bohuslav Reynek (1892-1971). In 1924 he authored 120 copies of forty prose poems written around 1922 and illustrated with linocuts by Josef Čapek. It belongs to the history of Czech Expressionist books, a series of few works published from around 1915 to 1925 and illustrated by Hofman, Čapek or Špála. The French edition of The Snake on the Snow features linocuts by the author from 1920. “Everything is pure in the work contemplated, reflected upon and translated by Reynek — not that men are naïvely perceived without flaws corruption, for Reynek fully recognizes and accepts the evil that haunts and erodes the world, but everything is weighed, the good as well as the bad, […] and set down here, in the second light of language, with sure, lucid and incisive writing.” (Sylvie Germain, preface).
