“Discovering in France the Romarin Association – The Friends of Suzanne Renaud and Bohuslav Reynek, dedicated to the memory of Czech poet, translator and engraver Bohuslav Reynek (1892-1971) and his wife, French poet Suzanne Renaud (1889-1964), led me to reflect on what drives such commitment to preserving memory. Founded in 1993 by families who had known both artists intimately during their time in Grenoble between the wars, the association works to make their shared cultural legacy, which extends to both of their homelands, known in France. It also seeks to ensure its preservation and transmission through bilingual French-Czech publications, exhibitions, and a wide range of cultural initiatives.
This discovery led me to research how Suzanne Renaud and Bohuslav Reynek have been perceived and remembered in France in the past, and to trace the evolution of that legacy under the influence of the Romarin Association to the present day. This study sheds light on the importance of individual initiatives that can, despite operating with little fanfare, transmit cultural heritage and transform our relationship with it.” S. E.

Born in 1999, Sára Endrová holds a dual master’s degree in French Philology and Museology from Charles University in Prague. Her undergraduate thesis explored the concept of memorial transmission through sites of memory, with a focus on Petrkov, the historic home of Suzanne Renaud and Bohuslav Reynek, which became Czech state property and a Czech-French cultural center in 2020. In 2023, she joined the French publishing association Romarin to write this book and uncover the existence of this second site of memorial transition dedicated to the work of the two artists. Sára Endrová is currently a doctoral candidate at Charles University in Prague and at the Université Grenoble Alpes, where her research focuses on the musealization of literature.
